"Snowmobiling allowed" can mean a guided trip to Old Faithful, a single groomed road to a crater rim, a former summer road that turns into a winter trail or a narrow route across lake ice for fishing. The Park Service lists 16 units with snowmobiling, from Yellowstone’s guided interior routes to Voyageurs’ frozen lakes. A listing does not mean you may unload a machine anywhere that has snow.
Choose the park for the trip you actually want. The governing questions are the designated route, whether it is open today, who may guide or operate, what machine qualifies and what the ice or avalanche conditions are. A summer road map is not a winter access map.
Five national park snowmobiling trips, ranked
01Yellowstone: guided travel or limited noncommercial access
Yellowstone fees, hours and alertsMost Yellowstone roads close to normal vehicle traffic in early November. After enough snow accumulates, usually around mid-December, some open to oversnow traffic. To reach Old Faithful and other interior destinations, NPS says visitors generally go with a commercial snowmobile or snowcoach guide, or under the Non-Commercially Guided Snowmobile Access Program. The second route is not an unguided joyride: one permit holder acts as the noncommercial guide for a friend-and-family group, with at most five snowmobiles, education, licensed operators and machines meeting NPS's New Best Available Technology standard.
The noncommercial permit lottery and later releases run on seasonal dates. Check current Recreation.gov inventory rather than treating cancellations as a booking strategy. Guided tour and snowcoach seats have their own operators and prices. Confirm entrance, dates, machine eligibility and weather policy before reserving anything. Bison and thermal areas require respectful distance even when seen from a road built for oversnow travel.
02Crater Lake: one marked route up the North Entrance Road
Crater Lake fees, hours and alertsCrater Lake National Park describes a nine-mile groomed snowmobile route from Oregon Highway 138 along North Entrance Road to the rim. The ride is conditional on enough snow and grooming, generally December through March. NPS prohibits machines beyond North Junction and on other snow-covered park ground. An open route is not permission to explore the full rim or descend onto the lake.
This is a focused out-and-back, not a park-wide network. Carry the required driver license or state snowmobile permit and valid vehicle registration, and stay on the marked course. Check the park's current winter road and snow report before driving to the North Entrance. The older evergreen route description is not a live opening notice.
03Pictured Rocks: winter roads become trails
Pictured Rocks fees, hours and alertsAt Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, NPS says most park roads go unplowed and serve as snowmobile trails in winter. Sand Point Road remains plowed for regular vehicles. County Road H-58 changes mode by section: the Munising-to-Adams Trail part is plowed, while the eastern unplowed stretch toward Grand Marais is for snowmobiles, apart from a short vehicle approach to a ski trailhead. Use the park winter road map for the exact segment.
A road with snow on it is not automatically open to a car, a machine or both. The rules protect the trail surface and other users, and the road reopens for driving when conditions allow in spring. Check the closure notice at the edges of the season; a printed date cannot tell you whether a thaw has changed the route today.
04Grand Teton: access for ice fishing, not touring
Grand Teton fees, hours and alertsGrand Teton National Park belongs on a snowmobile directory with a large caveat. NPS limits use in the park to a direct route on the frozen surface of Jackson Lake for ice-fishing access, entering as posted at Colter Bay Swim Beach. It calls for the appropriate Wyoming fishing license and gear, a valid driver license and registration, and a machine that meets Best Available Technology specifications. This is not an advertised sightseeing loop across the Tetons.
The park does not monitor or assess lake ice safety for you. Ice condition is a separate go/no-go decision even if the fishing access route is permitted. NPS's page also covers John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway and Grassy Lake Road, which have distinct rules; do not confuse that road with the Jackson Lake route. Someone wanting a scenic guided winter trip should look at Yellowstone's regulated options instead.
05Voyageurs: ice routes that can change overnight
Voyageurs fees, hours and alertsVoyageurs National Park has winter travel over frozen water. Its winter-safety guidance explains the markers: orange means danger, crossed stakes or diamond signs warn of hazards, and a Thin Ice sign is a stop, not a suggestion. Pressure ridges can form overnight and hazard reports may lag. NPS advises staying on marked trails, avoiding slush and open water, traveling slowly enough to react, and checking its weekly trail reports.
A white lake surface is not a verified crossing. Bring cold-weather clothing, know the marked route and arrange a backup when ice is not ready. A maintained ice road and a snowmobile trail are not interchangeable just because both cross water; look up the particular trail report for your route and travel mode.
Check the trip in this order
- 1
Route: Open the park's current winter map. Is the path designated for snowmobiles, and is its access point reachable by road or trailer?
- 2
Opening: Read the latest condition report. Snow depth, grooming, ice, closures and storm recovery decide whether a designated route is rideable today.
- 3
People and machine: Verify guide or permit requirements, operator education, license, registration, approved engine technology and any fishing purpose or gear restrictions. A friend's legal machine at one park may not qualify at another.
- 4
Exposure: Carry layers and a return plan. Wind chill rises with speed, visibility can disappear, and an ice hazard may not have been posted yet.
- 5
Fallback: Decide before departure whether a closed route means a guided snowcoach, a different winter activity or a postponed trip. Do not improvise a shortcut over unmarked snow or ice.
