Two. That's the whole list: of the hundreds of Park Service units, exactly two list team sports as an activity. The number tells the real story - the parks protect landscapes and history, not athletic complexes - but the exceptions are worth knowing, and one of them is a genuine urban sports hub hiding in plain sight.
The two parks with team sports
01Anacostia Park, Washington, D.C.
Anacostia fees, hours and alertsThe real deal: 1,200 acres of riverfront parkland in Southeast Washington that functions as the city's great outdoor rec center. The Park Service's own sports page lays it out - basketball courts, tennis courts, and multi-use playing fields strung along the Anacostia River, plus the pavilion that has hosted roller skating for generations, all tied together by the Riverwalk Trail. This is team sport as public infrastructure: league games, pickup runs and family field days on land that's been a public commons since the 1920s. If you want organized play on park land, this is essentially the only address in the system.
02River Raisin National Battlefield Park, Michigan
River Raisin fees, hours and alertsA listing without a documented playing field. River Raisin preserves the site of the 1813 battles and massacre in Monroe, and the Park Service's own pages for the park document the battlefield, its visitor center and its programs - nothing on them establishes team-sport facilities or organized sports on park land as of September 27, 2026. The Park Service lists the park under team sports, but its own pages do not document playing fields or organized sports on park land. For actual organized sports on Park Service land, Anacostia above is the verified answer.
Why so few?
The Park Service isn't in the recreation-league business - that's what city parks are for. The system manages team sports only where playing fields came with the land, which essentially means the great urban commons parks like Anacostia. Families looking for the park version of play should look at the playground list (twelve units) instead - and the visiting with kids guide for the broader strategy.
